Once your study permit, visa, and stay permit are settled, you need to process additional documents to fully secure your stay in Indonesia.
STM (Surat Tanda Melapor)
The STM is a document issued by the local police department office based on your domicile. For example, if you reside in the South Jakarta area, you must report to the POLRES of South Jakarta. The processing time typically takes 2–7 working days.
You must apply for the STM on your own; however, BINUS Internationalization Office will provide a sponsor letter and guide you through the procedure. The BINUS IZN team will assist and monitor the process until your STM document is finalized.
The STM serves as protection during random checks by police officers anywhere in Indonesia. For instance, if you are traveling within Indonesia and encounter police officers conducting document checks for foreigners, presenting your STM confirms that your presence has been reported to the police department and that your criminal record is clear. This ensures that no further questions will be asked.
SKTT (Surat Keterangan Tempat Tinggal)
The SKTT is a document for foreigners who already hold a stay permit (ITAS). This document provides a NIK (Nomor Induk Kependudukan), which is similar to the identification number for Indonesian citizens. The NIK is required when ITAS holders need to purchase vehicles or other properties in Indonesia.
For the SKTT process:
- BINUS can assist with processing for those residing in the Jakarta area.
- For those staying outside Jakarta, the SKTT must be processed by the student.
Similar to the STM, BINUS will provide sponsor letters and guidance to ensure the process runs smoothly. The SKTT is approved by the district office, also known as Dinas Kependudukan dan Catatan Sipil (Disdukcapil).

The SKTT can only be issued after obtaining the STM from the Indonesian police department.
