Empowering Students to Lead in a Changing World

Jakarta, 17 February — Adapting to change requires a deep understanding of its context, especially in today’s fast-evolving world.

In a recent international seminar, Dr. Tom Vine, Associate Professor at the University of Suffolk, led a thought-provoking discussion on how universities can bridge technological innovation and sustainable business practices.

The 18th-century Industrial Revolution sparked technological change, and today, digitalization accelerates this transformation, reshaping global business and fueling debates on its impact on daily life. Similarly, Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher from 2,700 years ago, described change as a perpetual state of flux. He famously stated that no man steps into the same river twice, as the river constantly changes—a reminder that change is the only constant in life.

These explanations illustrate the paradox of change for our students and faculty members. Dr. Vine emphasized that life does not follow a fixed pattern and is inherently unpredictable.

“With rapid technological integration in business, concerns about job security have intensified, as automation and artificial intelligence increasingly take over routine tasks. Many fears automation will replace human workers, leading to large-scale job losses. However, innovation drives job creation, fostering industrial growth and workforce transformation,” stated Dr. Vein.

When people resist change, they often perceive it as a threat rather than an opportunity. This resistance can lead to stress and uncertainty. Humans first bartered and then developed money to facilitate trade, creating markets that efficiently balance supply and demand—the foundation of business. Can you imagine our world without money?

Rather than viewing technological advancements as a threat, we should embrace them as growth opportunities. By continuously improving our skills and adapting to new developments, we can harness technology to our advantage, ensuring a future where innovation enhances our careers and quality of life.
