BINUS STAR Pre-Departure Briefing: Equipping Future Leaders with Skills and Cultural Insights
On 15-16 November 2024, BINUS University successfully held a Pre-Departure Briefing for BINUS STAR students, who are enrolled in the Even Semester 2024/2025 (Spring 2025) study abroad program. Hosted at Kebunsu, the event underscored BINUS University’s commitment to preparing students academically and as globally responsible individuals. By integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) into the program, BINUS elevated the study abroad experience from a purely academic endeavor to a holistic process of personal and social development.
During the briefing, BINUS STAR students participated in a unique cultural activity: preparing and sharing traditional Indonesian dishes using locally sourced ingredients. This hands-on project celebrated Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage while promoting the economic and cultural value of local ingredients to inspire entrepreneurship. The briefing was designed to align with key UNSDGs, reflecting BINUS University’s dedication to academic excellence and social impact. The following goals were highlighted:
UNSDG #4: Quality Education
The activity cultivated leadership, empathy, creativity, and problem-solving skills essential for academic and career success.
UNSDG #12: Responsible Consumption and Production
By emphasizing the use of local ingredients, the program highlighted sustainable food practices and the importance of storytelling through traditional cuisine.
UNSDG #11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
The initiative fostered community cohesion, demonstrating how partnerships can build inclusive and resilient communities.
Through collaborative projects to create and prepare the dishes, students enhanced their BINUS Graduate Attributes, which align with Top Demand Skills. The activity also emphasized cultural exchange and community service, reinforcing the importance of giving back to local communities and respecting their traditions as students prepare for international experiences.
Direct interaction with the local community had a profound impact on the students. It fostered empathy and social responsibility, providing a firsthand understanding of the value of community service. These experiences deepened their connection to local culture and broadened their perspective on global citizenship, encouraging them to contribute positively to the communities they engage with.
In summary, the Pre-Departure Briefing equipped BINUS STAR students with practical knowledge for their study abroad programs while solidifying their roles as ambassadors of global citizenship. The activities fostered sustainability, cultural appreciation, and social impact—core values of BINUS University’s mission to nurture globally competent leaders who make meaningful contributions to diverse communities worldwide.
