Empowering Students as Cultural Ambassadors in Promoting the Richness of Javanese Culture

Semarang, 11 August –Known for its strategic location and cultural richness, Semarang has created the perfect setting for learning and cultural exchange. In this dynamic environment, we encourage students and Binusian community at BINUS @Semarang to embrace roles as cultural ambassadors, embedding cultural awareness into their learning journey. This spirit was reflected in their participation in ‘Summer Space 2025’, organized by Alliance Française, allowing them to introduce Javanese culture and promoting intercultural exchange with 18 international students from Europe and Asia.

Alliance Française as the cultural and language center of the French Embassy in Indonesia collaborated with several universities in Semarang, including our campus, to spark active involvement of students and academics in cross-cultural exchange.

Dr. Fredy Purnomo, BINUS @Semarang Campus Director, emphasized the strong commitment to empowering Binusians as cultural ambassadors by promoting Central Java’s heritage to life through its gastronomy, language, and creative aspects.

Seven of outstanding students proudly represented our campus as cultural ambassadors:

  • Muhammad Fikri Alhaddar and Muhammad Adhiim Nugroho – Central Java Language Ambassador.
  • Nicolas Lorenzo & Aretha Cindy – Tourism Ambassadors of Semarang City.
  • Jessica Eilen – BINUS Language Ambassador.
  • Marco Wirawan and Vincent Jose Alviano – Content creators for the event.

“Our students’ participation in this event demonstrates our commitment to active engagement in international exchange and reaffirms our role as Binusians in making positive contributions to society, particularly through the realm of culture. By joining this initiative, our students are not only deepening their cultural awareness but also expanding their global friendships and connections,” said Sitha Afril, Character Building lecturer at BINUS @Semarang, as she looked back on their participation in Summer Space 2025.

As part of this cultural exchange, we presented the richness of Indonesian heritage through the lens of gastronomy. Our students introduced Klepon and Lunpia, iconic traditional delicacies that carry the flavors and stories of Javanese culture. Bringing a modern touch to this heritage, Muhammad Fikri Alhaddar, a Digital Business student and Central Java Language Ambassador, pioneered ‘Jelawa’, a digital platform crafted to share Indonesia’s culture with the world through food and storytelling. It represents Fikri’s dream of making Javanese culture more accessible to international audiences, and his journey continues at the National Language Ambassador Selection 2025 to be held this September.
