Stepping Beyond Borders: Pre-Departure Orientation Combines Skills, Culture, and Sustainability

Jakarta, 10 June — In preparation for the Odd Semester 2025/2026, BINUS University successfully held a Pre-Departure Orientation for its BINUS Student Transnational Ambassadors (BINUS STAR) at Taman Wisata Alam Mangrove Kapuk, Jakarta. The event brought together 143 students who are set to embark on their study abroad journey and represent BINUS at 75 host institutions across 19 countries worldwide.

The orientation served as a comprehensive briefing, covering key phases of the study abroad experience, from pre-departure preparation and expectations during the program to reintegration after returning home. Students were guided through the essential to-do list, visa and travel processes, cultural adjustment strategies, academic planning tips, and health & safety precautions. The event emphasized that studying abroad is not merely an educational endeavor; it is a transformative journey. BINUS STAR is not only expected to gain global experience but also to return with renewed perspectives, ideas, and networks to contribute meaningfully to Indonesia and the world.

What made the event stand out was its engaging and experiential approach. Rather than relying solely on presentations, the orientation packaged it through a series of mind-triggering games, hands-on team challenges, and interactive workshops, the participants sharpened their soft skills, ranging from leadership and problem-solving to critical thinking and adaptability.

In small group discussions, students also analyzed a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) framework to help them anticipate and reflect on their upcoming journey abroad. This exercise encouraged students to be self-aware and mentally prepared for diverse academic and cultural environments.

As a symbol of their commitment to global citizenship, the orientation concluded with a community development initiative. All participants took part in a coastal clean-up activity, collecting waste along the mangrove coastline. This action aligns with BINUS University’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), particularly in the areas of environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

This comprehensive orientation reinforces BINUS University’s vision to build and empower a world-class community of global leaders. These individuals not only gain international experience but also return with new insights and the drive to make a difference.

Bon voyage, BINUS STAR! May your journey abroad be filled with growth, discovery, and meaningful contributions to both your host communities, BINUS University, and Indonesia.
