Global Citizenship in Action: Tackling Coastal Waste

Jakarta, 11 January 2025 — Kicking off 2025 with a meaningful environmental initiative, BINUS STAR Community 101: Binusian The Explorer took place at Taman Wisata Alam (TWA) Mangrove, Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK). This event brought together BINUS STAR, prospective BINUS STARs, iBuddy+, and international students in a collaborative coastal cleanup, emphasizing the importance of environmental responsibility and global citizenship.

The activity aimed to raise awareness about climate change (UNSDG #13) and its significant impact on ecosystems and biodiversity (UNSDG #15). Participants navigated the mangrove area in small boats, collecting waste along the way. Although the task seemed straightforward, it required perseverance and teamwork, highlighting the challenges of maintaining ecological balance.

The mangroves—a vital ecosystem supporting numerous species, including some endangered ones—served as a natural classroom for the participants. This hands-on experience underscored the importance of proper waste management and demonstrated how small actions can profoundly impact sustaining life for future generations.

This initiative showcased BINUS University’s dedication to sustainability and environmental education. It also inspired participants to embrace their roles as global citizens committed to preserving the planet.
