Head of BINUS Northumbria School of Design To Give a Lecture on Indonesian Textile Traditions in Contemporary Fashion
On Tuesday 17th September 2019, the head of BINUS Northumbria School of Design, Ratna Dewi Paramita, will give a lecture alongside the Indonesian Heritage Society (IHS) entitled ‘Fashion – Out of Tradition into Modern Times’ at Erasmus Huis, Jakarta. The lecture is part of IHS’s evening lecture series and will also feature Sjamsidar Isa (Cita Tenun Indonesia) as Commentator and Anya Robertson (Indonesian Heritage Society) as Moderator.
Indonesia’s wealth of traditional fabrics and the inspired artisans who work with them remain an underdeveloped resource due to a lack of practical guidance on many levels. BINUS Northumbria School of Design aims to preserve these traditional talents, especially among creative younger designers, by reinventing this rich heritage while both maintaining its cultural integrity and sharing its significance with a younger generation.
The project undertook a journey throughout Indonesia to investigate and explore textile traditions across the archipelago. This included West Sumatra, Flores and Lasem among others where the traditional forms and production methods were approached through the eyes of the millennial generation as well as the emerging ‘slow fashion’ movement. The research provided an opportunity for design students to engage at a practical level with Indonesian traditional textile producers while also serving as a unique source of inspiration given that the new generation of designers is key to preserving the country’s traditions.
Ratna Paramita, Head of Fashion, has broad national and international experience in design and marketing. She will describe and display project achievements, from inspiration to finished product: tradition ‘twisted’ into the contemporary design without losing its underlying meaning.
