BINUS UNIVERSITY Hosts Seminar on ASEAN-MERCOSUR Cooperation

On 13th December 2017, BINUS UNIVERSITY held a seminar themed, ‘ASEAN-MERCOSUR: Southeast Asia’s Search of Meaningful Partnership with South America’ at its campus in Jakarta. The event aimed to highlight the ongoing mutual cooperation between ASEAN and MERCOSUR — a sub-regional bloc consisting of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Prominent guests providing keynote speeches at the event were H.E. Julio Arturo Cardenas as the Ambassador of Peru to Indonesia, the Ambassador of Brazil to Indonesia H.E. Rubem Antonio Correa Barbosa, and the Ambassador of Argentina to Indonesia H.E. Ricardo Luis Bocalandro.

The seminar showcased the developments from the recent ASEAN-MERCOSUR meeting in September of this year. As the fifth largest economic bloc in the world, MERCOSUR boasts enormous potential for the increased engagement between SME’s through trade and investment. This could include initiatives such as sustainable development cooperation, intellectual property, and security among many others — the MERCOSUR bloc contains some of the world’s top manufacturers of food, energy and commodities. Exploring such opportunities will only strengthen inter-regional integration and encourage inclusive prosperity among ASEAN and MERCOSUR member states.

Through this seminar, BINUS UNIVERSITY demonstrated its capacity to provide students with the understanding of the challenges and opportunities Indonesia faces in the era of globalization. The university’s graduates thus stand at the forefront to make an impactful change to the country’s competitiveness on the global stage.
