Knowledge Sharing in Design, Technology, and Innovation

Jakarta – During the latest Knowledge Sharing session hosted by our colleague from the School of Computer Science, Prof. Dipl.-Des. Felix Hardmood Beck from FH Münster University of Applied Sciences, Germany, an expert in visual communication and media design, shared his journey and showcased several of his groundbreaking projects. Each project illustrated the deep connection between art and technology.

His recent work has increasingly focused on advancing sustainable media design projects through the application of technology. In collaboration with the Institut für Konstruktions- und Funktionsmaterialien (IKFM), they created a water filtration prototype in Uttar Pradesh, India, designed to extract harmful chemicals from wastewater produced by the textile dyeing industry.

Another notable project included an innovative installation he helped create in 2008 for the BMW Museum Munich. The design featured a BMW model suspended in motion, a concept many companies later sought to replicate due to its impact.

Towards the end of the session, Dr. Abdul Haris Rangkuti, S.Kom, M.M, M.Si., a lecturer in Computer Science, engaged Prof. Beck in a discussion about the role of technology in enhancing design quality.

“When guiding your students through the project, you talked about developing concepts and selecting methodologies. How did you incorporate your ideas with technology?” asked Dr. Rangkuti.

In answer to this, Prof. Beck shared an example from his teaching experience, where he led students in building an automatic lamp that fused traditional design principles with the technological capabilities of Raspberry Pi or digital technology using AI. This project showed how incorporating technology can enhance design quality, highlighting the significance of a multidisciplinary approach in contemporary education.

Prof. Beck concluded by expressing his interest in future collaborations between BINUS University and FH Münster University of Applied Sciences, including faculty exchanges and opportunities for our students to participate in their summer school program, which focuses on Design, Technology, and Innovation, aligning with the core fields of BINUS University.
