Our Activities and Collaboration with Korean Community

Hi students,

Greetings from BINUS University, Indonesia!

We got your contact from the Council of International Schools (CIS), and we have curated the content below which may be relevant for you.

Have you ever thought to study in beautiful Indonesia, and join one of the largest Korean communities abroad in Southeast Asia?

Indonesia has been home to more than 78,000 Korean expatriates, where more than 50% of them are based in the Jakarta area, where our main campuses are located. Korean expatriates in Indonesia have established a strong network organising many initiatives within the Indonesian community.

Do you know that BINUS University has a close relationship with 24 university partners from South Korea? Or that we have our own dedicated Korea Corner for cultural exchanges between Korean students and other students?

Every year, BINUS University has admitted quite a high number of Korean students in our international program, both for the student exchange program and full-degree programs. Not only that, we observed an enthusiasm in Korean culture and language among our Indonesian and other foreign students. This has encouraged BINUS University to establish Korea Corner at our Anggrek campus. The Korean Corner at BINUS University follows the basic concept of a Hanok (Korean Traditional House). It is equipped with a Media Room, various books and audiovisual materials about the Korean language, culture, travel, and education.

RECENT EVENTS

To celebrate our Korea Corner’s anniversary, we have prepared two exciting events this October. Yesterday, we were discussing on Korean Cinema/Series made available on streaming services. The other one was an insightful talk show series on COVID-19 and ICT with our South Korean university partner. Check these out!

P.S – Follow our Korea Corner social media page @koreacornerbinus to see upcoming activities.

South Korean arts and entertainment are globally emerging, particularly in the last decade. Furthermore, since the movie "Parasite" (Bong Joon-ho, 2019) won 4 Oscar awards including Best Picture and Best Director, South Korean pop culture has dramatically gained massive popularity more than ever.

At the same time, Over the Top (OTT) or streaming services are also gaining ground in the market as an affordable, personalized, and convenient alternative to cinema distribution, not only for Hollywood but also for other world cinemas, including Korean movies and K-drama.

We invited Vidio's content specialist and our Film Department lecturer, discussing to what extent can we consider streaming services as an alternative distribution for global cinema, and measures taken to prevent any possible piracy violations. More than 400 students were engaged in the discussion. It was a blast!

We were welcoming Prof. Jaeseok Kim from Yonsei University, Prof. Shin-Il Lim from Seokyeong University, Prof. Nam-Young Steve Kim from Kwangwoon University, and Mr. Fuad Sahid Lalean from Accenture Indonesia as our keynote speakers on our annual Wonderful Indonesia and Korea (WINK) 2020 webinar series. These talk show series discussed Covid-19 Treatment and Prevention in Indonesia based on ICT services. The panelist discussed several topics including:

  • How to overcome the Covid-19 Situation using IT
  • Bioelectronic technologies development to increase the quality of life
  • Trends and challenges in research on Covid-19 Detection

It was an eye-opening session and we can't wait to join in more sessions with WINK!

We are excited to see you joining the BINUSIAN family at BINUS UNIVERSITY and celebrate more cultures with us! Feel free to get in touch with us at global@binus.edu with your inquiries, we’ll be happy to assist.

Thank you and stay safe!

Regards,
